Dear Draft

Life advice from a beer that has seen things. Take every word with a grain of salt (preferably on a pretzel).

The Grain of Salt Column

Dear Draft,

A running tab of life’s biggest questions.

Advice worth considering... but never taking too seriously because let's be real you can't take anything too seriously these days. Send us your problems and your opinions. We keep the tab open.

First draft, final draft

Every answer comes with a first draft (our gut reaction) and a final draft (what we’d actually say).

Grains of salt

1 means pretty solid, 5 means pure opinion. Season accordingly.

Round #12Salt level

Dear Draft, I make what everyone calls "good money for my age," and I still can't tell if I'm doing well or just bad at spreadsheets. Where is my head supposed to be at?

— Rich-ish in Raleigh

Dear Rich-ish,

First draft: sell everything, buy a van, learn to make candles. Final draft: your number is a weather report, not a verdict. Check it once a month instead of every night, nobody has ever budgeted their way into feeling rich. Move one automatic transfer to savings on payday, let the rest be a mystery, and stop comparing your chapter three to someone else's highlight reel.

Cheers, Draft 🍺

Round #11Salt level

Dear Draft, My manager keeps saying "we're a family here" and then emails me at 11:40pm. Is that a compliment or a hostage note? How do I leave at five without seeming ungrateful?

— Adopted in Atlanta

Dear Adopted,

First draft: walk out now, families don't make you sign things. Final draft: "we're a family" usually means we'd like the guilt without the unconditional support. Leave at five, answer the morning one. If they genuinely want a family, they can start acting like one, families feed you, cover your rent when things go sideways, and do not log your hours.

Round #10Salt level

Dear Draft, I doomscroll the news every night and wake up already tired of the world. How do I stay someone who cares without letting it run my whole day?

— Exhausted in Erie

Dear Exhausted,

First draft: phone in the river, farm, goats, learn to whistle. Final draft: caring and watching are not the same act. Pick two things you can actually touch: one local, one that costs money or hours, and let the rest of the world be a headline you don't have to solve. Read once, in the morning, on a real screen. The world will still be there after you sleep, and frankly you're more useful to it rested.

Cheers, Draft 🍺

Round #9Salt level

Dear Draft, My friends order appetizers without looking at the menu and I do the split in my head every single time. Do I say something, or keep quietly suffering at the register?

— Budgeting in Boston

Dear Budgeting,

First draft: find new friends who respect a nine-dollar appetizer. Final draft: say the boring thing out loud exactly once, "I'm running tighter this month, can we do the cheap thing?" Real friends adjust by the second hangout. The ones who make it weird weren't your friends, they were an expense.

Cheers, Draft 🍺

Round #8Salt level

Dear Draft, Everyone at work is building a side hustle and posting about it. I just want to do my job well and go home. Am I falling behind or finally awake?

— Unbothered in Boise

Dear Unbothered,

First draft: you're awake, they're all asleep at their desks with a Canva template. Final draft: wanting a life that fits inside your hours isn't a lack of ambition, it's a different kind that never fits on a business card. Do the job well, go home, keep a hobby that doesn't scale. The hustle will still be there in five years, tired and posting about it.

Cheers, Draft 🍺
